Dutch studio UNStudio and Cox Architecture have won a competition to design a super-tall skyscraper with a pair of twisted green towers for Melbourne.

"We will do our best to contribute our 'green spine' to a healthier and more promising South Bank and wider Melbourne," said Caroline Bos, co-founder of UNStudio. UNStudio and Australian firm Cox Architects beat other well-known studios -- including BIG, MAD, OMA and MVRDV -- to design the ￡1.1 billion landmark project for property developer Beulah International. The taller of the two towers will be residential, while the 252.2-metre tower opposite will house offices, hotels, restaurants and bars.

UNStudio and Cox Architects have designed the skyscraper's "green spine" that rises from the ground to the top of the tower. These "spine" outdoor Spaces will be green with natural materials, while the rest of the tower's glazed surfaces will feature French balconies that transform into sunshade fins as the building rises. "In addition to providing twisted sculptural contours, Green Spine is an architectural element that combines multiple functions in a fluid posture," said Ben Van Berkel, founder of UNStudio.

A platform connecting the two buildings will include schools, a day care center, a library, a cinema, an auditorium and a BMW car experience center. The platform will be on top of a publicly accessible terraced park. The Green Spine will be 30m taller than Tower Q1, Australia's tallest building on the Gold Coast, and 50m taller than The Current tallest building in Melbourne, Eureka Tower.
